Free Music for YouTube

With users watching about one billion hours of YouTube videos each day, (yes, each day!), if you are in the business of content creation, YouTube is a platform you cannot ignore.

Therefore, finding free music for YouTube that is high quality and safe to use is essential,

There are many places where you can download free music for YouTube, including my own music artist website, however, I am going to focus on the YouTube Free Music Audio Library for this article.

Many content creators are still unaware that YouTube has its own, free-to-use audio library.

According to YouTube, the music within this music library is:

  • Copyright Safe
  • Royalty-Free
  • Can be used safely in your videos.
  • Your videos can be monetized

If you are looking for free music for YouTube, then the YouTube Audio Library should definitely be a place you check out.

Let’s take a comprehensive look at the YouTube Audio Library and its key features.

What is the YouTube Audio Library?

The YouTube audio library is a library of music and sounds made available to you, the content creator, which is copyright safe and can be used on your videos for YouTube.

The YouTube Audio Library contains free music and sound effects for videos that you can search, browse and use for free.

The best part about using the YouTube Audio Library is that the music is already pre-cleared by YouTube and according to their documentation, the music and sound effects downloaded from the YouTube audio library, is Content ID safe – in other words, the music owner will not claim on your video through the YouTube Content ID system.

How do I use YouTube’s free music library?

To search for free music within the YouTube Audio Library, click on the filter icon on the top right-hand side of the library as shown below:

From this, you will get a drop-down menu where you can either search for a music-specific term or search music on the basis of :

  • Track Title
  • Genre
  • Mood
  • Artist Name
  • Song Duration

In addition, you can also search by “Attribution Required”

Some music artists, like myself, always request that you give attribution in the form of a music credit. This is as simple as saying in your description or video end credits, who wrote the music and where you got it from.

For independent music artists, this is incredibly important as it gets the music artists’ names out there and helps others find their music.

YouTube does go into the specifics of how to give credit on their support page here:

To learn more about the specific music you want to use in your YouTube videos, and the licence requirements of that particular song, just place your mouse over the YouTube icon on the right-hand side. This is the “licence type” for a particular song as circled in red in the following image.

This will give you a pop-up with a summary of how you can use the music in your YouTube videos, something like the following:

Can I monetize my videos with free music from the YouTube Audio Library?

You can monetize your videos with free music from the YouTube Audio Library.

If you are part of the YouTube Partner Program, you can monetize your content, which means allowing ads to feature on your videos from which you earn revenue.

According to YouTube support at the time of writing,

Copyright-safe music and sound effects downloaded from the YouTube Audio Library will not be claimed by a rights holder through the Content ID system.

This means that any money you make through advertising and the YouTube Partner Programme is yours and you do not need to be concerned about external claims from composers through the YouTube Content ID system. Your profits are your own.

Can I use this music outside of YouTube?

The music within the YouTube Audio Library is cleared for use on the YouTube platform only.

Therefore, if you make a video using music from the free YouTube Audio Library and want to play the video elsewhere, for example at a film festival, you will need to do your research and contact the music artist to check.

This is the big disadvantage of the YouTube audio library.

According to YouTube themselves:

YouTube can’t give legal guidance, including guidance on issues with music that can occur off the platform.

Therefore if you are planning on making content that will feature outside of YouTube also, then it is probably easier and safer to find an independent free royalty free music supplier.

For free music, you can check out my music library, which is cleared for use on YouTube but can also be used in a variety of places outside of the platform.

If you are looking for a paid for option, I recommend Shutterstock who have a massive library of royalty free music cleared for YouTube and other platforms.

Sound Effects for YouTube

Sound effects for YouTube can also be downloaded through the YouTube Audio Library for free.

Using sound effects can add great character and increase audience engagement by retaining your viewer’s attention.

To access free sound effects for YouTube, log into the YouTube Audio Library as already mentioned above via the YouTube Creator Studio,  and select the Sound Effects option from the top menus bar as shown below:

Where else can I download free music for YouTube videos?

There are many free online music resources outside of the YouTubeAudio Library where you can download free music for YouTube videos.

A good method when searching for free music downloads for your  YouTube videos is to use the term “Royalty Free Music”.

If you are looking to download free music for videos on YouTube, royalty-free music is a great option to choose from. With many good and free royalty-free music libraries now available, you can find free music for your YouTube videos quickly.

Royalty-free music is simple music licensing approach that allows YouTubes to use the music without any further royalties or hidden fees.

You can download free royalty-free music for YouTube videos from my music site and use it as background music in your YouTube video for free.

When you download free music from my free music site, you are provided with a full commercial music license so you can prove to YouTube or whoever asks, where you downloaded the music from and show you have permission to use it.

I give away my music for free in return for attribution. So basically, please put a link in your YouTube decision, as per the following:

It can be so easy to get a copyright strike and find your content blocked.
